MATS HOME DECOR . Weeks 2-4

Whew! Weeks 2-4 flew by and it's already the last week of MATS Creating Collections for Home Decor. The past three weeks were focused on fabric, glass, and ceramics.

Of all the weeks, my bird illustrations for Week 4 were my favorites.

I can't wait to see what Week 5 brings!

MATS Home Decor . Week 1

I started a new MATS class last week. Hooray! It's a five-week intensive on Home Decor. Our first assignment was to design a metal object with a bird theme. I created this fun meditation cabinet. What do you think? I'm also working on a secondary design to turn it into a jewelry cabinet with a mirror inside instead of a chalkboard. :)

MATS ASSIGNMENT BOOTCAMP . JULY

And that's a wrap! Five months of MATS assignments and a few made it into the portfolio. Hooray! July's assignment was to create a children's book spread featuring a mouse with wings and a hummingbird with shoes. I was enjoying it so much I ended up making two pieces.

↞↞↞↞↞▲↠↠↠↠↠

Enter...my magical mouse, Enid, and her pet rabbit Isobel. The two have all sorts of fun together- playing with Enid's dollhouse collection and adventuring outdoors. {Although, Isobel does get a bit bored when Enid practices piano.} In this particular story, both decide to go on a birding expedition in search of the elusive red-slippered hummingbird. In the end, Enid uses her extraordinarily super-powered green thumb to grow the bird's favorite flower, and, voila! the hummingbird appears.

↞↞↞↞↞▲↠↠↠↠↠

This was by far my favorite assignment of the five. I am really enjoying children's book illustration and inventing stories. :)

Missoula MADE Fair

↞↞↞↞↞▲↠↠↠↠↠

I had a great time at the Missoula MADE fair this year! I kept it pretty low-key compared to other years, and only brought my remaining originals and postcards. I've really had my head down these past few months working on my digital portfolio and polishing things up to start sending out to agents. :)

Overall, it was a wonderful day- nice to see old friends and meet new.

MATS Assignment Bootcamp . June

Only one more month of MATS Assignment Bootcamp to go! This month our inspiration was Ellis Island, and our assignment was to design a mug inspired by times past. I decided to create a 1920s gypsy fortune teller. The title of my piece is "The Palm Reader's Table."

↞↞↞↞↞▲↠↠↠↠↠

I've always wanted to have my palm read- I'm pretty sure I would trust the woman sitting at this table to do it. :)

12 Angry Black-Haired Men Wearing Stripey Shirts

Oh, Illustration Friday! It's been years since I've submitted to the site, but when I first started sharing my work publicly back in 2007, I used to be a regular. I met so many wonderfully supportive people through the process and began to gain confidence in my work.

Feel free to browse some of my past submissions on my old blog - Ida's Sketchbook.

The prompt for this week is "Team." I immediately thought of the 12 Angry Men illustration I created, and knew these guys were right for the job! :)

Here is my submission along with a fun time-lapse of the creation of the work below.

MATS Assignment Bootcamp . May

I can't believe we are already wrapped up with our third assignment for MATS Assignment Bootcamp. Only two more months and assignments to go! I suppose that just means we are getting closer to the Creating Collections for Home Decor course that I am most excited to start. :)

This month our assignment was to create a notebook design inspired by roses and a Gertrude Jekyll quote (Garden Guru Extraordinaire). Below is my submission. I didn't get to spend as much time on it as I would have liked, but, overall, I am happy with the way it turned out.

MATS Assignment Bootcamp . April

Our MATS bootcamp April assignment was due this past Monday. ✨ We were to create a "courage mind map" using personal icons and power symbols. These are the areas I find I draw on my courage the most- trusting life, my intuition, nourishment, transformation, and positive self talk. And, of course, I love exploring and adventuring in the mountains! 🌿🐻🌸✨

MATS Assignment Bootcamp . March

Earlier this year I stumbled across Lilla Rogers and her amazing MATS professional development courses. Over the winter I took her five week class on illustrating children's books and fell in love with her teaching style and positivity. So, of course I had to have more! I signed up for MATS Assignment Bootcamp which will tide me over for the next five months. :)

Below is my submission for the first of the monthly assignments- design a backpack using abstract patterns. I created a dark and moody piece using icons and photography from my travels in Denmark, added a little abstraction, and voila- turned it into a backpack fit for bohemian dreams. Where will your next adventure take you?

Mini Monster Extravaganza

A cute series of mini monsters wanted to come out of my pencils and make an appearance for my First Friday show at Upcycled (Missoula, MT) this past fall. They are a happy little clan that can be hung on the wall and serve to protect your precious ones from bad dreams. These Mini Monsters are the perfect sized stocking stuffer for your favorite kids (little or grown up). They can even hang on the Christmas tree! There are a limited number in existence, and they can only be found at Upcycled- 517 S Higgins . Missoula . MT.

Happy Shopping!

Hello December!

Last year I had the privilege of working with photographer Athena Lonsdale on the Hellgate Rollergirls' annual fundraising calendar. Each chosen artist was given a month in 2015 and the direction that the art (or craft) had to merge in some way with the rollergirl(s). How to get that done? Completely up to the artist. I went with my traditional illustration style and drew Pipsqueak and her little monster (Monster Kat) on a small piece of wood. Then we had fun bringing the drawing to life! It is finally time to display my month- December 2015. :)

Exciting News! A Public Studio is in the Works!

I am happy to announce that I will be opening a public studio in historic Reeder's Alley, Helena, Montana.

Dalton Abbey is about to have a {literal} brick and mortar home. It is a tiny, creaky, haunted room, but I can't wait to roll up my sleeves, slap on some paint, and make it my own. Reeder's Alley is one of the oldest sections of town (1870s), and I am beyond excited to share my art and knowledge of the area with tourists and passers-by.

Mid-May is my soft deadline for opening. Stay tuned to the blog, my Instagram feed, or Facebook for updates.
